Overview

DutySafe is a patented duty-cycle protection system engineered specifically for low-voltage, high-current DC motor circuits found in trolling motors, winches, actuators, and other rugged mobile-power applications. The design combines two complementary protective elements — a bi-metal auto-reset breaker and a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) thermistor — to provide both fault protection under gross overcurrent and long-term duty-cycle protection when the motor is operated close to its rated current for extended periods. Traditional bi-metal breakers alone can "stair-step" toward thermal failure under sustained overcurrent, while PTCs alone latch open on the slightest overcurrent, preventing normal duty-cycle operation. DutySafe eliminates both failure modes.

Under sustained current well above the breaker rating, the bi-metal element trips and resets — familiar auto-reset behavior. Once conditions cool, the breaker re-makes and normal operation continues. If the overload persists, the PTC eventually trips and holds the circuit open until the current is removed and the PTC cools, providing a definitive thermal-shutdown backstop that prevents damage to the connected motor. Under normal duty-cycle operation with current at or slightly above the rated value, only the PTC responds — allowing the motor to complete its duty cycle without nuisance breaker trips. Both protection modes complement each other to cover the full spectrum from gross fault to sustained-overload conditions.

Available ratings include 5A, 15A, and 30A with quick-disconnect terminals, plus a 50A version with 10-32 threaded stud terminals for high-current cable connections. Additional ratings are available on request. The DutySafe design complies with SAE J553 for automotive and marine circuit protection, and the compact form factor allows installation in existing bi-metal breaker cavities. Typical deployments include electric winches, actuators, trolling motors, boat livewell pumps, RV slide-out motors, and any low-voltage DC motor application where thermal protection and full duty-cycle operation must coexist.
