HV Shunt Capacitor Banks
Overview
Used by transmission and sub-transmission utilities to provide bulk reactive support, filter harmonic currents, and improve system voltage regulation across the network. Bank ratings range from 2.4 kVAR through 600 MVAR across voltage classes from 2.4 kV to 765 kV, with fuseless, externally fused, and internally fused designs.
Open-rack construction uses hot-dip galvanized steel structures with high-voltage station-post insulators and integrated overhead bus. Each capacitor is an all-film, folded-foil unit factory-tested to IEEE 18 and IEC 60871-1 dielectric requirements. Banks are engineered with protection relays for unbalance detection, current-limiting reactors for switching inrush, and grounding switches for safe maintenance access. Custom protection schemes, insulation coordination, and seismic-qualified structures are available.
Typical deployments include substation reactive-support banks, HVDC converter station filter banks, arc-furnace flicker compensation, and wind/solar plant point-of-interconnection VAR banks. Refer to the attached data sheet for the standard bank configurations; contact our engineering team for turnkey engineering, protection studies, or site-specific bank designs.
